• Gray or black streaking on batt faces. This is filtration soiling - Los Angeles smog and attic dust being pulled through gaps in the insulation by pressure differentials. It means air is moving through, not across, your thermal boundary.
• Compressed or displaced batts, especially near eaves. Rockwool Comfortbatt is specified at 2.5 to 4.0 pounds per cubic foot density. Walk on it, store boxes on it, or let a cable installer crawl across it, and the mineral wool fractures at the fibers. Once compressed below 80 percent of original thickness, R-value drops proportionally.
• Moisture staining on ceiling drywall below knee walls. In Leimert Park and Baldwin Hills ranch homes with unvented knee walls, Rockwool batts without proper air barriers create cold-side condensation during Santa Ana wind events. The batt wicks moisture to the drywall, even though the material itself does not absorb it.
• Ice-cold ductwork in summer, sweating in winter. When attic floor insulation is incomplete or wind-washed, supply ducts lose 15 to 25 percent of their thermal capacity before air reaches the register. We measure this with an infrared camera during our initial walkthrough.

What you can safely check: measure batt depth with a ruler at six random points, photograph any labels you can read, and look for obvious gaps around chimneys, plumbing vents, and recessed cans. What goes wrong fast: Rockwool fibers are irritating but not dangerous like asbestos - the hazard is missing the air leaks and blowing new insulation over them, which buries the problem and makes it harder to fix later.
